What We Tested: Swimming and Backstroke as Full-Body Actions
OLI is an otter, so swimming feels like an obvious action for the character. The production challenge was that an audience also knows how an otter should move through water. The first tests asked the scene to coordinate the head, spine, front paws, rear legs, tail, water surface and forward travel within one short clip. Backstroke added a second layer because the belly, legs and face remained exposed while the body rotated and floated.

Instead of asking OLI to turn, accelerate, roll onto the back and kick across the frame, the shot held a stable angle and limited the movement to a gentle float, a short paddle or a restrained change in gaze. The water still communicated the setting, but it no longer competed with several simultaneous body decisions.
A stable camera also made quality review honest. With less orbiting or tracking, body length, leg placement and the orange pouch could be compared from one moment to the next. The calmer result was less spectacular on paper, yet it felt more like a deliberate OLI performance and connected more cleanly to neighboring shots.

A cut to a separately approved angle was more honest than hiding a structural problem with a longer dissolve.
